Monaco has Phocaean Greek origins and was referred to by Ancient Ligurians as Monoikos. This comes from the Greek "μόνοικος", "single house", from "μόνος" (monos) "alone, single" + "οἶκος" (oikos) "house". According to ancient myth Hercules visited the Monaco area and expelled previous gods. The only temple left in the area was the temple of Hercules. This "House" of Hercules is where the city of Monoikos (Monaco) truly derived its name.
